Artist Statement
I. Love. To. Create. There is something magical about the process of turning imagination into reality. This drive has motivated me my entire life. I never tire of the rush that comes from a wistful idea that matures and metamorphoses into something tangible. The work becomes a part of me and I become a part of my work. The artwork is a visual documentation of my thoughts, emotions, ideas, ambitions, struggles, and progress. This process fosters a certain outlet for expression that allows my heart to breathe.
Some of the best days are marked by secluded hours filled with paints, pencils, brushes, and messes. These are the vehicles that take me away from a world that is increasingly complex and cluttered to a time or place that is simple, childlike, and optimistic. Through playful exploration, I attempt to harness the wonder and innocence of childlike observations and weave daydreams and nostalgia back into the web of our daily lives.
I find inspiration hiding in plain sight. Inspiration can hide at the playground, the grocery store shelf, or on the wagging tail of a furry friend. Sometimes I find inspiration hiding in a color palette seen on a drive home, or in the faces of inquiring students.
Light-hearted genres from the 20th Century influence my style including Fauvism, Surrealism, Pop At, and Photo Realism. From these styles I combine vivid, untraditional colors, dream-like scenes, playful objects, and a realistic approach.
I work in a variety of media, but my preferred mediums are oil paints, watercolors, and alcohol markers.
Art can have the power to influence. It is my hope that my works allow you to experience. Smile. Giggle. Let your guard down. Remember how fulfilling a child’s simple pleasures can be.
